is it this year for the mets?? Well the trading deadline has come and gone, and for whatever reason Omar Minaya saought fit not to make a trade and give up some of the Mets farmhands which he feels are very valuable. The two most urgent needs for the Mets was a corner outfielder and help for the beat-up bullpen. He let players such as Xavier Nady go to the Yankees, Manny Reimerez to the Dodgers and Jason Bay go to the Red Sox. Mr. Minaya said publicly that what the other teams were asking in return was too high. He went on to say that he would bring up some of these players to help the struggling Mets. As of this writing he has kept his word, finally, young players such as Arhenis Reyes, Nick Evans, Daniel Murphy and Eddie Kunz have been brought up within the last two weeks. However, there is some minor adjustments that have to be made. Evans, and especially Murphy are good hitters, but they are infielders by trade, Evans--firstbase and Murphy--Thirdbase, but they being put in the outfield where they have very limited playing time. A.Reyes is a gifted infielder, who is being used at secondbase and Kunz can become a top relief pitcher. With all this there is still a very noticeable shortage of outfielders, and one would hope that Fernando Martinez, the Mets prize young player is brought up sooner rather than later. He is a fine outfielder and with the hopeful return of a healthy Ryan Church, the outfield problem will correct itself. ------Another recent situation is the health of John Maine, who will miss his next start and the health of Billy Wagner. Jonathan Neise, will be brought up to fill in for Maine, and if there is a problem with Wagner, thats what Kunz is here for.
The point of all this is that one would now wonder if the Mets will be better off still trying to make a push for the playoffs this season OR-- make themselves really strong for next season when they open up on their new stadium.
