Michaela from Fun Sized Style Breaks the Mold for Women with Disabilities in the Beauty Industry

IMG_3231
Women with disabilities are usually not included in the beauty industry and Michaela is seeking to change that! Michaela loves chatting about makeup and the latest trends on her beauty, fashion and lifestyle channel on YouTube. She has a disability called Osteogenesis Imperfecta (Type III). In simpler terms it is a connective tissue disorder in which her bones are very fragile and she is very tiny in size. She also has an assistance dog, Chloe who she absolutely adores. She helps Michaela perform physical tasks that she is unable to complete herself. She lives in bitter-cold Michigan, in the hopes to move to Los Angeles, California. She will be starting college in the fall to purse a major in marketing to land her dream job as a social media coordinator. She loves to share her life and passion through a camera lens 🙂

How were you inspired to begin your channel? Where did you start?

MD: One day I don’t even remember how, but I stumbled upon on these girls doing makeup tutorials, favorite product videos, etc. and I thought to myself, I love this stuff too! Why can’t I do this too? And from that point on, that’s when FunsizedStyle was born.

What inspires you and keeps you moving forward? Why are you passionate about it?

MD: It’s pretty easy to keep moving forward on doing what you love. Makeup, fashion and everything is just something I love. I love being able to share my passion with others and the connection that YouTube has.

What’s your favorite aspect of the beauty, cosmetics and fashion industry?

MD: My favorite aspect of the beauty, cosmetics and fashion industry is that it’s always changing. There’s always new products, new packaging, and new trends. It’s always exciting when your favorite brand comes out with a new line of products! Plus, it gives me an excuse to go shopping, which is never a bad thing! 😉

Screen Shot 2016-05-06 at 4.29.48 PMWhat makes your brand unique from other beauty, cosmetics and fashion channels?

MD: I think what makes my brand unique from other beauty, cosmetics and fashion channels is that when people first approach my channel I don’t think they expect to see someone with a disability, especially a person my size, talking about beauty, cosmetics, and fashion. Women with disabilities are usually not included in this industry, and I think that’s what makes my channel unique. I am starting to change the fact that women are usually not included in the beauty and fashion industry.

How do you organize/plan out your content?

MD: For the most part, I usually plan out/schedule my videos on whatever comes to mind. Some videos take more planning than others, but for the most part it’s whatever I feel like talking about that day.

What is your goal for your channel? Dreams? Who are your typical followers? How would you describe them?

MD: My goal for my channel is to always create quality content, and to always have fun doing. Another goal that I have for my channel is to continue to break the stereotype of not seeing women with disabilities in the beauty and fashion industry. My typical followers are young women and teens.

Do you have any tips for others trying to break into the beauty, cosmetics and fashion industry?

MD: I know this so cliche, but BE YOURSELF. I see so many YouTubers just doing what’s popular and not truly what they love. Have your own style, wear your favorite kind of makeup, do the videos you love and your personality will shine through in your videos!

What are your favorite beauty products or your go-to skincare regimen? Screen Shot 2016-05-06 at 4.33.10 PM

MD: My favorite beauty products, oh boy we could be here awhile. 😉 First of all, I couldn’t live out my Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation. Best foundation ever. My Urban Decay Naked Basics palette is another product that I couldn’t live without. Benefit Cosmetics and ColourPop Cosmetics are two other brands that I could not live without. Benefit Cosmetics quality of the products are to die for, and the packaging is absolutely amazing. ColourPop Cosmetics another great brand. They’re so affordable, but yet the quality of their products are to die for. I have yet to find a ColourPop and Benefit Cosmetics product that I don’t love. As for my skincare regimen it’s quite simple. I use Simple Skincare everything, because that has been the only and absolute best thing for my skin. I also use Acne Clear Envy to get rid of any of those pesty zits that may show up on the most inconvenient times.

What products are you currently using on a daily basis?

MD: I am always changing up my products so it just depends on the day. Currently I am using Smashbox Photo Finish Primer water, Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation, Rimmel London Stay Matte powder, Starlooks eye primer, UD Naked Basics palette, BareMinerals Lash Domination mascara, Benefit Cosmetics Hoola bronzer, and anything ColourPop for my lips.

What’s your personal style?

MD: I am not sure why, but I feel like it’s always difficult to describe my personal style. But I’d have to say my style is extremely girly. I’m definitely not a tomboy.

How does your personal style influence your branding?

MD: This sounds weird, but my personal style reflects me, and my YouTube channel reflects me so it pretty much goes hand in hand 🙂

What’s your favorite brand and why?

MD: Benefit Cosmetics and ColourPop Cosmetics are brands that I could not live without.

What are your go-to outfit combinations?

MD: My go-to outfit combination is definitely, a stylish top paired with a circle skirt!
