Rachael, or Jouzai, is a alternative youtuber who focuses her channel mainly on dark styles and beauty looks. In the future she plans to focus more videos on some awesome fantasy looks. She loves creepy and dark things, games and a little bit of anime too! She incorporates her interests of dark things into her fashion and makeup and enjoys helping people achieve a similar style.
How were you inspired to begin your channel? Where did you start?
Originally I wasn’t planning to be a part of the YouTube community at all. I had gotten a lot of requests on social media to do a makeup tutorial, so I went ahead and made one! A few days later I went back to the video to see it had about 60k views, now it’s risen to a little over 380k. I have no idea what happened! But after that I got a lot of requests to continue posting videos. I was (and still am am) extremely busy with school and work so I rarely posted, but eventually started to get more interested in making videos. I know there are a lot of people who have really beautiful outfits or makeup but refuse to mention any details, so I wanted to be helpful to people. I’m not the most talented person on youtube, but if what I post inspires people then I’ll continue to do so!
What inspires you and keeps you moving forward? Why are you passionate about it?
If it wasn’t for all the people encouraging me to continue, I probably wouldn’t have made any more videos. The biggest inspiration I have is them! They motivate me to continue and are really supportive.
What’s your favorite aspect of the beauty & cosmetics industry?
My favorite aspect of the beauty and cosmetics industry is the community. Although there are some elitist people, there are so many amazing, kind and supportive people too! I love getting to talk to people who have similar interests. I’m a part of several Facebook groups for makeup and hair, it’s so fun! The people are so sweet and make some hilarious makeup jokes that keep the group really positive. I love how much they try to make people feel comfortable and not embarrassed to post. Besides a few people who were removed from the group immediately, they have all been so supportive of other members. It always made me sad to see people judging others for the makeup they wear or how they do it, so it’s been such a good experience to see a more positive uplifting community!
What makes your brand unique from other beauty channels?
Honestly, I don’t think I’m all that original! There are so many people on YouTube, I’m sure there’s someone out there who’s made similar videos. I think that my dyed hair, piercings and overall style is what draws people into my channel. I wear a lot of black with big boots and chokers which has become a more popular style the past few years. There are also many people who enjoy watching my videos because they like my voice, which I’ve always found annoying personally haha. Apparently some people find it calming and enjoy listening to it, although sometimes it’s a little too quiet!
“The point of my channel is to be as helpful as I can to people! Whatever they want to know, I’ll help as best I can”
How do you organize/plan out your content?
The videos I produce come from requests I get on social media. The point of my channel is to be as helpful as I can to people! Whatever they want to know, I’ll help as best I can. I generally make posts asking what material people would like, pick one, and then make a video for it. It’s a bit tough to plan because I don’t have any type of filming light. I can only record in one part of my house that has good lighting early in the afternoon or the morning. So timing is always difficult with school. I’m planning to get a box soon which should make things a lot easier this summer!
What is your goal for your channel? Dreams?
The goal for my channel has always been just to be helpful! I have no issue covering all types of things, it’s a beauty channel right now, but I have been thinking to encorporate a bit of chemistry into it as well to help people purchase good makeup products. In the future I do want to help people use better, healthier products, there are so many that harm your body, some go beyond just your skin. I have a background in organic chemistry (I’ve completed all the chemistry at my college and work in our science building as a chemistry tutor) so I think I could do a good job helping people not buy products with toxic ingredients and help them figure out what to stay away from. Hopefully I am able to reach lots of people and be helpful to them! Another goal is to start focusing more on fantasy and creepy looks as that’s the style I mostly enjoy. Recently people have been asking for more regular looks, so for my next videos I’m hoping to go back to some neat elf or faerie looks and a few scary ones!
Who are your typical followers? How would you describe them?
My typical followers are usually goth or enjoy alternative fashion and makeup. I personally would only use goth as a general umbrella term for myself, as there are many “not goth” things I do and like, so for the sake of the elitists I don’t really identify myself as such. Although the styles I wear are all at least inspired by many different types of goth, so most of my followers/subscribers place me under that category. I also tagged my first video as a goth inspired look, so that’s generally how people found me and that type of audience kinda stuck. I also have some great followers from other countries! I have some awesome followers/subscribers from Russia. I’m not sure the reason, however in person many people think I am from Russia or some other place. We are part polish and Mexican, but we definitely exhibit mostly polish traits. I get a lot of comments and responses in Russian (online and in person), I can’t speak or read it but I sometimes use google translate. It’s really cool to be able to communicate with people from all over the world!

Do you have any tips for others trying to break into the beauty industry?
Well, I feel like I might be bad at giving tips since my channel was kind of an accident! I would tell you to stick to it and commit. Post regularly! I definitely lost of lot of views from only updating every six months or so (obviously). I would suggest that before making a channel you have a good camera and light. People look for good quality videos. Do what you love and get your personality across! I know my favorite youtubers and beauty gurus incorporate their personality into their videos, just be yourself!
What are your favorite beauty products or your go-to skincare regimen?
I’m still looking for my perfect brand or product, it’s difficult with my incredibly dry, pale and sensitive skin. Having a yellowish undertone as a pale person is also an added pain! I do love tarte products, although I have to put a pure white powder over them so they match! Stargazer pure white has definitely saved my life as a pale person though! It’s pretty pigmented so it really does make my foundation look super pale. I’ve been using it for about 4 years now! Tarte and bare minerals are two of the only products that have been able to work with my dry skin, so I love them! Other foundations and powers stuck to my dry patches, fell off etc. no matter the primer, setting spray or moisturizer. I did manage to almost make Kat von Ds lock it foundation work thanks to Evian moisturizing spray, it’s one of my favorites and works really well for my dry skin. Thankfully I no longer get leather like rashes on my face and body, I use first aid care and prescribed moisturizer for people with dry skin conditions. They are the best I’ve found although my skin is still dry!
What’s your personal style?
I love very dark, creepy styles, elf looks (as I love lord of the rings and Tolkien) and faerie looks. I also love “white goth” and metal head styles. It’s kind of a mesh of lots of styles/goth styles mixed together like a lot of people in the alt. community. I like the heavy contrast of dark and light with my pale skin. I like to have a darker colored hair, my favorites have been teal (current) and black. They make me look a bit more creepy but also give me the room to do other styles by changing my makeup and clothes (like faerie or elf styles). My styles have definitely been influenced by my personality and interests. I love creepy and dark things, I run a blog full of horror or just creepy gifs and images. I think it’s awesome! Movies or games with creepy effects like silent hill or Alice madness make me happy as strange as it may sound to some people. I also really like reading horror books more so than I like horror movies. These interests definitely inspired my creepy style, sometimes I even like to do some makeup involving fake blood or cuts. I also enjoy playing games like D&D (although I’m not currently playing) and fantasy gaming. I express the types of literature, movies and games I love in the looks and styles I create or wear.
