Kelsey Reddick, social media manager by day and YouTuber by night, started beauty vlogging on YouTube in 2008 using her laptop’s webcam. When dividing her time between her beauty blog and food blog throughout college became too much to keep up with, she decided she wanted to have her cake and eat it too! She combined her two passions, food and makeup, and launched her lifestyle blog Modern Martha. After graduating with her Masters in Marketing from Florida State University in 2012, Kelsey moved to Denver, Colorado where she currently lives with her soon-to-be husband, Xavier, and their furbaby, Scrappy CoCo.

How were you inspired to begin your channel? Where did you start?
KR: I first started my YouTube channel in the summer of 2008. My family moved just before I left for college, so I had a few friendless weeks to kill. Since I was bored, I thought it would be the perfect time to dye my hair red, but there weren’t any videos showing you how to mix dye and developer. I decided to try it out anyway and film my experience so the next person who came along would at least have a what-not-to-do video as a guide. My hair turned out great (think Jean Grey), but the video is now set to private because of issues with copyrighted music (rookie mistake!).
What inspires you and keeps you moving forward? Why are you passionate about it?
KR: I really just love the beauty industry. I’ve tried to nail down what I love about makeup, whether it’s the creativity or the ability to transform your look, but it’s impossible. Plus, the passion in the beauty community on YouTube is absolutely contagious.
What’s your favorite aspect of the beauty & cosmetics industry?
KR: I love that the beauty and cosmetics industry is always evolving. Right when everyone thought contouring was the next big thing, along came strobing. It can be a little overwhelming to keep up with it, but it’s fun.
What makes your brand unique from other beauty channels?
KR: I try to keep it as real as possible. I’m a makeup junkie, but I’m no makeup artist, so if I can do a certain makeup technique or hairstyle, so can you. I don’t like to hear people say, “I could never wear that,” or “I can’t pull that off!” My goal is to give others the confidence and the know-how to pull off whatever look they want.
How do you organize/plan out your content?
KR: There are so many new products coming out all the time, I focus my content on new releases for the most part.
What is your goal for your channel? Dreams?
KR: I would love to get back to my original inspiration for creating my channel: creating original content. I find myself getting swept up in trends (get ready with me, empties, etc) that I have to remind myself that every now and then you have to take a step back.
Do you have any tips for others trying to break into the beauty industry?
KR: Go for it! It might feel awkward to sit in front of a camera and talk about makeup, I was too embarrassed to tell my friends about my YouTube channel for two years, but it’ll feel a lot better when you get over that hump.
What are your favorite beauty products?
KR: A few of my all-time favorites are MAC matte Lipstick, Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Color, Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Concealer and the Urban Decay Naked Palette. I seriously don’t go a single day without Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion.
What products are you currently using on a daily basis?
KR: My current daily beauty products are Urban Decay One & Done Complexion Perfector, Make Up For Ever Pro Sculpting Face Palette, the Urban Decay x Gwen Stefani Brow Box and ColourPop Super Shock Shadow in Hanky Panky.
What’s your personal style?
KR: I like things simple and classic. I should probably branch out a little more, try some daring eyeshadow shades or a bold printed dress, but I usually play it safe.
What’s your favorite brand and why?
KR: Urban Decay is one of my favorite brands, which I find quite interesting because their edgy image is quit the opposite of me, but maybe that’s why I like them! I started out buying colored eyeliner and a few palettes, but when they started growing their Naked line, my Urban Decay collection expanded rapidly.
