How were you inspired to begin your channel? Where did you start?
I was inspired to start my youtube channel summer of 2011 by other youtubers. I fell in love with the “beauty community” from Macbarbie07, or Bethany Mota and Juicystar07, or Blair Fowler. I was bored one summer night and I had just received a Naked Palette in the mail, one of my first makeup products ever. I decided, why not make a video!? I had asked my parents previously if I could start a channel, and my dad was completely against it for privacy reasons, but little 13 year old me, being the rebel I was, uploaded my very first video. The quality, top of the line iPod touch! Following the iPod Touch I would film on my Macbook Pro, then my mom’s Sony Handicam that she used to film my sister playing sports, then a Canon Rebel T3I, and now, a Canon 70D! Honestly I made that video to get through summer boredom, just for fun, but I had no idea of the opportunities that would come.
What inspires you and keeps you moving forward? Why are you passionate about it?
My viewers are definitely the people that inspire me. When I receive a direct message on Twitter or Instagram, or even just a comment, saying that I made someone’s day better, well there is really nothing like it. I have been told by so many people that I helped them to love their bodies and who they are. I am on the heavier side so I think a lot of girls can relate to me, because I definitely don’t have the “model” body. I make it a point on my channel to make sure that all my viewers know they are beautiful, in every single way! Who’s singing? Only me. Okay. And the fan pages. It feels so weird saying that! Some of my viewers go to the extent of making fan pages for me! I die every time because I’m like, I’m a toad!?! But it’s an amazing feeling. I am so deeply passionate about my channel because I get to do what I love, and people love it in return. When viewers come up to me when I’m in public and know who I am, well that is the craziest feeling in the world. I recently traveled to Florida to attend Playlist Live, and me and my friend Lauren, another youtuber, were walking around Disney. As we were walking to our next ride, a girl was smiling at me. I started smiling back because that made me happy that someone smiled at me. As I walked past I heard “Kelsey?” We took a picture and talked for a little bit, but for the rest of the day I was smiling from ear to ear, maybe because I was in Disney, but mostly because of this experience with Kristen. Experiences like these make all of the all nighters of non-stop editing worth it.
“My favorite aspect of the beauty, cosmetic, and fashion industry is definitely the people you get to meet. I have met many of my best friends on Youtube”
What’s your favorite aspect of the beauty & cosmetics industry?
My favorite aspect of the beauty, cosmetic, and fashion industry is definitely the people you get to meet. I have met many of my best friends on Youtube, but also in the Cosmetology program I attend. I am a senior in high school and I attend the program through my school. A lot of my best friends are from the program, including Kassie, Kassidy, Taylor, Jenny, and the list goes on! And my youtube friends, I cannot believe the friends I have met through Youtube. I consider all of my viewers my best friends, but specifically I want to mention Jayde. Normally I become friends with other youtubers because we see each others videos, maybe think we could be friends, want to do a collab, but Jayde was different. For a while we would DM on Twitter, but I suck at checking twitter so I was like why don’t you text me. We’ve been best friends for almost a year now, the crazy thing is, she lives in Canada! And my ultimate youtube bestie, Emma Monden. Emma isn’t like most teenage girls I know, she is wise beyond her years. If I’m ever having a crisis, I will always go to Emma because she gives the best advice!
What makes your brand unique from other beauty channels?
I think what makes my channel unique is the fact that I’m always very honest and real with my viewers. I think some creators try to always look the way society wants them to, but I am not like that. I have uploaded videos of myself upset, even crying, about issues like anxiety, depression, bullying, and more. I think this helps people connect with me because they can relate to these issues.
How do you organize/plan out your content?
I organize/plan out my content by keeping a tab open on the notes app on my iPhone. Whenever I get an idea I will write it down. I also talk to my friends/viewers about what they want to see from me. I get inspired from other Youtubers, magazines, websites and just life itself.
What is your goal for your channel? Dreams?
My goal for my channel is to inspire others and guide people to love their bodies. The things I have accomplished go far beyond anything I could have ever dreamed of. My typical followers are girls/women from ages 10-24, but I also have some male followers and people of all ages. I would describe them as awesome and amazing and beautiful!
“it’s important to remember where you came from. I think it is so important to always stay humble and be true to yourself”
Do you have any tips for others trying to break into the beauty industry?
My number one tip is to always stay true to yourself. I see many people enter the industry and get carried away with followers, money and fame. I think it’s important to remember where you came from. I think it is so important to always stay humble and be true to yourself.
What are your favorite beauty products or your go-to skincare regimen?
If I were to tell you my favorite beauty products we would be here all day, but you can go watch one of my videos for that! #selfpromo My skincare regimen honestly varies, right now I am using the tea tree cleanser from the body shop which I have been loving.
What products are you currently using on a daily basis?
I currently use my Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer, Loreal Telescopic Mascara, and Angel Lipstick. I use a lot more than that but those are my staples.
What’s your personal style?
My personal style varies, some days I will look like a bum, and other days I love to get dolled up.
How does your personal style influence your branding?
My personal style influences my branding because I think it shows how real I can be. Sometimes I will film in a sweatshirt and leggings and other days I will film in a dress and wedges! It just depends on the day.
What’s your favorite brand and why?
If we are talking clothes, definitely American Eagle. Their clothes are adorable and I love them so much!
What are your go-to outfit combinations?
My go to outfit combination is definitely a t-shirt and leggings or a sweatshirt and leggings. How could you go wrong!? I also love wearing dresses, it’s one piece so it’s super easy to put on, and adorable!
