Emily Dao creates beauty, fashion, and lifestyle related videos on YouTube and currently has over 40,000 subscribers! She enjoys creating a variety of content because she likes a wide range of things, and feels that her channel shouldn’t be limited. She makes “get ready with me’s”, look-books, and even videos related to life and college. If you’re interested in any of these topics, you should definitely check out her channel!
How were you inspired to begin your channel? Where did you start?
I uploaded my first video in May of 2013, but didn’t fully begin to build my channel until that summer! I was inspired because one of my friends from school (you may know her as Mia Stammer/ MamaMiaMakeup) created videos and I thought it was so cool! Because I was dorming at the time in college, I had a few friends who knew how to edit, so they were kind enough to teach me, and the rest is history!
What inspires you and keeps you moving forward? Why are you passionate about it?
So many things inspire me every day. It’s nice to be a Youtuber and going to college because you meet so many people and are exposed to different perspectives. One day I might be inspired by a conversation with a friend, and another day I might be inspired by something my professor says in class. I’m passionate about Youtube because it’s my way to channel my creativity and also gives me the opportunity to inspire people.
What’s your favorite aspect of the beauty & cosmetics industry?
My favorite aspect of the beauty and fashion industry is that it’s always changing. For many people, change is frowned upon because it pushes you out of your comfort zone. I love that there are constantly new trends and old trends from different time periods that are able to make a comeback.
‘The world is constantly evolving, and I believe education better prepares you to adapt to those changes.”
What makes your brand unique from other beauty channels?
I have a lot in common with my fellow beauty, fashion, and lifestyle Youtubers, such as spreading positivity and good vibes, and making my channel a safe space for those who kind of want to get away from life. The aspect that makes my channel unique, in my opinion, is that I’m always encouraging education. I am a firm believer that knowledge is power. The world is constantly evolving, and I believe education better prepares you to adapt to those changes.
How do you organize/plan out your content?
I usually plan my content a week or two ahead of time, depending on my video ideas. Some weeks are harder than others to come up with video ideas, but generally I like to pre-film a week ahead. Sometimes I’ll plan out a month’s worth of videos, but halfway through the month I’ll be inspired by something and completely change my agenda!
What is your goal for your channel? Dreams?
My goal isn’t based off of the number of subscribers I have or how many views I get per month. My long term goal is to be able to make high quality content that my viewers can learn from, whether it’s a new makeup skill I acquired, or about college. I would also love to write my own book because I’ve always had a passion for writing as well.
Who are your typical followers? How would you describe them?
I like to call my viewers “gems”, because “em” is my nickname, but in a broader perspective, a gem is precious and unique, just like each and every one of my viewers. I love my gems so much, though! They always leave me such positive and encouraging comments on my videos and on my social media accounts! I love responding to them because we both have each other’s back.
Do you have any tips for others trying to break into the beauty industry?
I would say the number one tip to break into any industry is to just DO IT. That’s it. Once you build up the courage to go for whatever it is you want to do, the rest will be so much easier.
What are your favorite beauty products or your go-to skincare regimen?
- My favorite beauty products change from time to time, but my current favorite skincare products are:
- Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser
- First Aid Beauty Radiance Pads (for Toning!)
- First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream
What products are you currently using on a daily basis?
I use all the products I mentioned above on a daily basis! They are my favorite and really help keep my skin clear and fresh. As for makeup products, I am loving the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara and Benefit Hoola Bronzer!
What’s your personal style?
My style can fluctuate depending on my mood and what my day holds, but I would say my overall style is comfortable and sporty. I’ve been loving the sneakers trend with a hoodie and boxer braids lately!
“My long term goal is to be able to make high quality content that my viewers can learn from, whether it’s a new makeup skill I acquired, or about college.”
How does your personal style influence your branding?
My style is influences my brand by letting my viewers know that you can wear whatever you want and be confident, as long as you’re comfortable. There have been multiple times where I’ve worn a hoodie in my videos and dressed comfortably. I may not be a fashionista, but I’ll always feel confident because I’m comfortable in my clothes and my own skin.
What’s your favorite brand and why?
My favorite brands would be Nike, Adidas, and Brandy Melville. I love Nike and Adidas for their apparel and shoes, and I love Brandy because of their basics. I have a petite frame, so finding clothes that fit and flatter can be a struggle, but Brandy Melville seems to be the one store where I know almost every piece will fit well.
What are your go-to outfit combinations?
If I’m being honest, my outfit usually consists of Lululemon Leggings, an oversized sweater, and combat boots or sneakers! It’s just the quickest way to get ready and it’s comfortable! Lately I have also been into high-waisted jeans and the off the shoulder type of tops too, they’re so cute and summery!
