Amy Castaneda (also known as Crafty Amy) is a twenty-three year old student from San Francisco studying Apparel Design and Merchandising. She has a YouTube channel that consists DIY tutorials with a following of over 86k subscribers. She has been designing since she was thirteen years old and continues to pursue it as her career.
How were you inspired to begin your channel? Where did you start?
The summer of 2007 I looked up DIY videos on YouTube since I always read DIY books as a child. I found the art of Sculpey clay and found videos on sewing. The channel Theadbanger taught me so much on how to sew. I loved how the DIY community on their website was so big and everyone was inspired and motivated by each other. I got a sewing machine that summer of 2007 and started sewing since then. Learning how to sew from YouTube along with self teaching, I was inspired to start a channel in the summer of 2009. The only equipment I had was a point and shoot camera, no video editing software so all my videos had to be a straight upload with no editing. I was limited to what I can film so I only made Sculpey clay videos that were about 5 mins. I stopped uploading because I wanted to upload better content. Throughout my high school years I continued making all kinds of things with my sewing machine. In 2012, I restarted my channel and started uploading quality content. I upload unique DIY tutorials that consist bags, clothing transformations, and Sewing 101 Episodes. I’ve always been very crafty since I was a child. I loved all kinds of arts and crafts. I loved creating at a very young age.
What inspires you and keeps you moving forward? Why are you passionate about it?
When my subscribers get excited for my next video along with all the ideas I have planned, is what motivates me to continue making videos. Every time someone comments saying I helped them learn how to sew or overcome a difficult technique because of my videos, it brings joy to me. I am passionate about what I do because I enjoy sharing ideas and teaching. I love creating new things out of something old and seeing the outcome after all the hard work. I am also majoring in Apparel Design and Merchandising so I know I want my passion to be my career.
What’s your favorite aspect of the beauty & cosmetics industry?
Seeing all the different creative designs from designers all over the world from different eras is my favorite aspect of the fashion industry.
What makes your brand unique from other beauty channels?
My channel is unique because of all the unique DIYs I teach. Not only do I like to recreate trending items, I also like to create items I’ve never seen on the Internet or in stores.
“I love creating new things out of something old and seeing the outcome after all the hard work.”
How do you organize/plan out your content?
I try to post videos people request the most and put those a priority. I also like to post “surprise” videos people will find innovative and creative.
What is your goal for your channel? Dreams?
As long as I’m inspiring people to learn something new, spice up their creatives juices, and motivate people to continue their pursuit in what they love to do, that would be a great accomplishment. My dreams would be to gain lots of opportunities through my channel, like travel to all kinds of places and work on different collaborations with brands and other creators.
Do you have any tips for others trying to break into the beauty industry?
I would recommended putting yourself “out there” in any way like YouTube, blogging or even entering competitions. Getting involved in school activities like fashion clubs and majoring in Apparel Design is really helping for me to getting into the fashion industry.
What are your go-to outfit combinations?
I love pairing a jean jacket with colored or black pants along with a cute shirt. When I’m in a hurry for school that is what I usually wear because it looks like you planned the outfit but it was really easy and fast. For shows, I love to pair that with some vans and converse.

What’s your personal style?
My personal style would have to be a mix of retro/contemporary and casual/sporty. My favorite eras I get inspiration from are the 50’s and 60’s. My Mexican culture is another influence to my style in a contemporary way.
What’s your favorite brand and why?
I like any brand that fits my style. I usually like to shop at Forever 21 because they carry a wide variety of different trends. Pacsun is also a great brand the usually fits my casual sporty side.
