Alison is a high school junior and beauty/fashion/lifestyle YouTuber of three years. She hopes to inspire and improve the lives of others with her videos relating to beauty, fashion, lifestyle, advice, and school tips.

How were you inspired to start your channel? Where did you start?

It was late 2012 and I was in the eighth grade when I first considered the idea of creating my own YouTube channel. I had become very interested in the beauty and fashion vloggers I watched on YouTube.

At the time, I was new to the makeup aspect of YouTube and it was here that I learned how to use makeup for the very first time. After six months of working to persuade my parents to let me create my own channel, they finally conceded in spring of 2013. My parents (at the time) had imagined that my fascination with creating videos would be fleeting. I would watch videos of well-known YouTubers giving advice to those that were aspiring to make their own channels and imagined myself as a creator. I laugh now when I think back to my very first video, filmed on my flip video camera and edited with Windows Movie Maker.

What inspires you to keep moving forward?

I now answer that question very differently than I would have nearly three years ago. At the current time, I can say that it is the connection with my viewers that inspires me the most to keep creating fresh content. As a channel progresses, a creator develops a close bond with their viewers. This bond can only be achieved over time and with a progressively deepening understanding of the needs of both the viewers and the creator. When I first started my channel, I had a much smaller audience than I do now, so one might say that I have grown with my audience. When I first started my channel, I was driven purely by tenacity and my passion for beauty and fashion. Now, I can say that I am driven by my viewers and their desire for content. My channel has evolved greatly since I first started it, and I frequently delve into new topics such as school, health tips, general life tips, and confidence at the request of my viewers.

“By utilizing cosmetics and clothing as a tool, one can express a look that is both unique and true to self”

Why are you passionate about it?

I think my passion for the fashion/beauty industry as well as reaching out to/helping others bloomed at a very young age. I had always been very interested in clothing even as a young child, and was known to try to help others out with attire even in pre-school. Granted, I probably wasn’t making much of an impact in reality, but I did find my niche quite early on. I was also very involved in the drama community in my elementary and middle school years, and the idea of making videos for others to watch was highly appealing to me. When I created my channel, I was able to incorporate two critical elements of my life into one amazing and irreplaceable experience.

What’s your favorite aspect of the cosmetics and fashion industry?

It has always fascinated me that by a switch in makeup look and swap in clothing style, one can completely change the way they are perceived. By utilizing cosmetics and clothing as a tool, one can express a look that is both unique and true to self.

What makes your brand unique from other beauty, cosmetic, and fashion channels?

I have branched out and made videos about other topics unlike some beauty/fashion vloggers. I have touched on health, confidence, bullying, tips for new YouTubers, and constantly stress the importance of doing well in school to achieve life goals. I also understand that the majority of my viewers do not have much excess pocket money, so I like to give money saving tips in my videos.

How do you organize/plan out your content?

I like to keep a detailed agenda of everything related to my videos. I will write down the dates that I plan to film, edit, and upload. I will also make lists of items I will need for my videos if necessary. I will occasionally need to make changes in my schedule due to upcoming exams and/or events.

What is your goal for your channel? Dreams? Who are your typical followers? How would you describe them?

My goal is to continue to grow my channel, and to be able to share my content and ideas/tips with as many people as possible. My typical followers are women and girls ages 13-24. They are a loyal group of people who I like to connect with through my YouTube channel and social media. Since the majority of my viewers are around my age or younger, I constantly strive to be a good role model for them. I would very much like to attend a YouTube event one day (such as Playlist live).

Do you have any tips for others trying to break into the beauty, cosmetics, and fashion industry?

Photo 4I have lots of tips for those interested in starting their own beauty/fashion YouTube channel! I say that the key elements to a successful channel are good video quality, a great personality, and perseverance. Lighting and a HD camera are the most important things when trying to obtain high video quality. Once you have that, let your personality shine! Most people are a little shy in front of the camera when first starting, so practicing is very important. YouTube is also something that is hardest when just starting out, so perseverance may be the most important out of all of the things I’ve listed. If you are truly passionate about the topic you’re discussing, then stick with it. I also have a “YouTube 101” video series on my channel dedicated to new YouTubers interested in growing and improving their channels.

What are your favorite beauty products or your go to skin-care regimen?

My favorite beauty products are definitely mascara, brow powder, and concealer.

What products are you currently using on a daily basis?

I tend to go for a more natural makeup look on a daily basis than I do in my videos. I like to let my skin breathe as often as possible. I wear concealer, brow powder, mascara, lip balm, and a lip color on a typical day.

What’s your personal style?

I would describe my personal style as feminine and casual. I like to incorporate trendy but feminine items into my wardrobe while keeping a casual air.

How does your personal style influence your branding?

Photo 3I often go for a feminine style approach, and a natural makeup look. I also try to be as personable as possible on camera. I believe it is the combination of these things that “brands” my channel. I want people to feel comfortable and light hearted when they watch my videos.

What’s your favorite brand and why?

I like many different clothing brands but I think that my favorite of all would be American Eagle. The AE style of clothing best reflects my own style. With AE, I can dress more casually and go for a denim and t-shirt look, and I can also find my favorite dresses and skirts at the same store.

What are your go-to outfit combinations?

It wouldn’t be unusual to catch me in a dress and wedges or a skirt and blouse around this time of year. I also love wearing feminine shorts and tops when the weather warms up.
